Blue Health: The Healing Power of Water

Hello, beautiful souls!

Today, I want to share with you the transformative concept of Blue Health and how it has shaped my journey in both personal well-being and yoga.

Discovering Blue Health

Although I’ve always been a water baby—whether swimming, surfing, or exploring beneath the waves—it wasn’t until a few years ago that I truly understood the profound impact water has on our well-being. I had always felt my happiest and most free in or on the water, but I never fully appreciated why.

That changed when I was working for a mental health and well-being charity that was deeply rooted in the concept of Blue Health. Blue Health is the idea that spending time near, in, or on bodies of water—oceans, rivers, or lakes—has a powerful effect on both physical and mental health. It can lower stress, improve mood, and cultivate a deep sense of peace. During my time with the charity, I conducted research into the benefits of Blue Health, and it all started to make sense.

As a child growing up in Cornwall, I spent endless hours on the water—fishing with my family, kayaking, and sea swimming. One of my fondest memories was getting to drive the RNLI lifeboat on a stormy day when I was just 10 years old! Water had always been a source of adventure and joy for me, but now I began to understand that it was also deeply healing.

Yoga & Water: Flowing with the Ocean

While working in the health and well-being sector, I had the incredible opportunity to experience weekly yoga classes on a large ship. This was a pivotal moment for me. Practicing yoga by the water, feeling the gentle rock of the waves beneath me, and embodying the fluidity of the ocean taught me a valuable lesson—water is the ultimate teacher. It reminds us to go with the flow, to embrace the storms in life, knowing that calmer days will come.

It also makes perfect sense when you consider that our bodies are made up mostly of water. Just like the ocean, we are constantly shifting, adapting, and responding to our environment. Yoga, much like the sea, invites us to find balance, resilience, and ease.

As well as being a yoga teacher, I’m an avid traveler who loves to explore new places—and the ocean is always involved! Whether I’m snorkeling, paddleboarding, or surfing, the water is my happy place. Since completing my yoga training, I’ve noticed the deep connection between yoga and time spent in the ocean. Breathwork, stretching, and mindfulness all enhance not only our experience in the water but also our ability to remain calm in intense environments.

Bringing Blue Health into Your Life

You don’t need to live by the ocean to embrace the benefits of Blue Health. Here are a few simple ways to weave water into your holistic wellness journey:

🌊 Mindful Walks by Water – Take a stroll along a river, lake, or beach, allowing the sights and sounds of the water to calm your mind.

🏄‍♀️ Water-Based Activities – Try swimming, paddleboarding, or even floating on your back in the water to feel weightless and free.

🧘‍♀️ Yoga by the Water – Whether it’s a lakeside practice, beach yoga, or even a gentle meditation by a fountain, water adds an extra layer of tranquility to your flow.

💧 Bring the Water to You – If you’re not near a natural body of water, create a small Blue Health space at home with a tabletop fountain, ocean sounds, or even a simple bath ritual.

Blue Health, yoga, and the ocean are deeply connected, and I’m passionate about sharing this with others. The water has been my greatest healer, and I hope you too can experience its magic in your own way.

With love and light,

Jazmin Storm
